Another Networking Breakfast, another £10 and no results.  Not working yet is it?

How to get more results from your 40 second presentation without being pushy.

What successful networkers do is not obvious to the newbie networker.  There is a secret to it.

A successful 40 second presentation can:-

  • position you as an expert
  • perk up the ears of the other networkers
  • have them queuing up to set appointments with you
  • lead to your networking becoming a successful business generation tool
Which is why it is such a shame that the newbie networker can be munching on breakfast after breakfast with no other result than another £10 spent (and an expanding waistline).

It's important to understand that every single person who stands up is Selling, Marketing and Speaking In Public.

If you read the Michael Gerber book The E-Myth Revisited you will see how often small businesses are started by skilled people. Skilled at working in their business, not working on it.

They've not (yet) developed the extra skills they need.

Some of these extra skills are (strangely enough) Selling, Marketing and Public Speaking.

At a networking event all three skills are squeezed into the 40 second, 1 minute, 2 minute (or however long) mini-presentation that is required from each member.

This is the first impression - get it wrong and not a lot happens.  You will probably do what I did and maybe get one prospect or two (if you are lucky) over a period of weeks.

When you get it right, people will come to you effortlessly.

With the right way of presenting your business message you can have people lining up to book appointments with you and you haven't even left your seat!

This isn't pushy sales, it's "pully" sales.  You are pulling people to you.

Marketing people do this for a living.  They write copy with "hooks" that grab the attention of the prospect.

Newspaper editors know that headlines hook readers and sell newspapers.

Public speakers know how to lead an audience through a speech to a successful conclusion.

So a successful presentation (however long) at a networking event has to do all of these things.

It takes time to develop this on your own.  That's why there are 6 month networking membership programmes.

Now here's the thing.... you don't have to spend months learning this when you can quickly learn a formula that tells you what to say and what not to say.

Did you know, there are four common mistakes made in a brief networking presentation?

The first one alone will have people fading you out and you've barely got started.

Learn how to hook the audience with your message so that they want to learn more from you.

Here's the first mistake.

Telling them who you are!

How do you get the attention of someone in a room full of people?  How do you get the attention of someone intently focussed in a book?

You call them by their name!

But how does the standard speech begin?  We tell them our name and expect them to listen!

"Hi, I'm Fred Smith and I'm an IT consultant/financial adviser/marketing consultant".

Oh dear.  That's it.  They've stopped listening.

Ann Convery, (more on her in a moment) says just drop the "I am a ...."

Why?  Because they are thinking:

"Oh how nice, you are a (whatever).  Don't need you.  Not listening now"

Instead they start re-arranging their cutlery, placemat and napkin.  You've lost them.

(Have you noticed how important it can be to get the long side of the placemat exactly in line with the edge of the table?)

A resource that's a perfect fit for business networkers.

So, if you can't say "Hi, I'm a ..." what can you say?

Glad you asked.

The answer comes from Ann Convery, an international speaker, seminar leader, trainer and author who has worked with top professionals in the fields of politics, medicine, law, business, health and beauty.

I stumbled across her website by accident, started using her material and had four people approach me (including two directors) the very first time I used my new pitch.

That was a huge surprise.

However, it makes sense once you know what to say and what not to say.

Ann has created a resource that is perfect for what Networkers need.  See for yourself.

Why does upgrading your business message work?

Let's go back to something mentioned earlier.

To get someone's attention we need to call them by name.

Well almost.

A successful mini-presentation is going to call someone by their problem, their issue, their want or need.

They'll think "Hey he/she is talking to me".

What do most people do?  They do the introduction thing from their evening class!

The lecturer says "Tell us who you are and what you do and what you hope to get from the course".

Maybe we should do this in reverse.

Let's attend lots of evening classes with our new and improved business message and see how many extra appointments we can drum up!

The point is not to get bogged down in introducing ourselves and what we do.  Instead we should focus on the result that the client can achieve.

Let's tell them who we are at the end of the presentation after they know what they can get from us.

And by the way, this presentation can work outside the networking arena as well.

Once you know what to say it gets so much easier to answer the question - "What do you do?"

Your listeners are passive.  You can either turn them on or tune them out depending on what you say and how you speak.

Click here, visit Ann's Products page and order one of her "Speak Your Business" packages.

Don't have anymore unfruitful breakfasts.  (I'm sure there's a pun in there somewhere).

Wishing you successful networking.
